SFG Supports Financial Literacy

Greensboro Day School’s Financial Literacy
and Confidence Program

Pam Stearns, SFG partner and CPA, has been asked to participate in a new Financial Literacy initiative aimed at high school students at Greensboro Day School. GDS has consistently been voted
the #1 private school in the Greensboro/High Point/Winston Salem area. All GDS juniors this year will rotate through Pam’s eight-week Financial Literacy and Confidence course.

Topics covered include the economics way of thinking and decision making, opportunity costs and scarcity, wealth vs. happiness, self-discipline, planning and determining priorities, money
management and “the power of starting early,” choosing a career/college/return on investment scenarios, characteristics of entrepreneurs, gross vs. net income (where does it all go?), taxes
and insurance, fixed vs. variable vs. discretionary expenses, credit advantages and disadvantages and the importance of FICA scores to your future, scam awareness, various types of financial
investment opportunities vs. risk tolerance and the importance of diversification. Class participants will also work on a topic of their choice for a final class presentation.

North Carolina Central University Wealth Management Camp for Financial Literacy

During the week of July 14th, three of our wealth advisors, Teresa Talton, Lindsay Brock, and John Thomas participated in a Financial Literacy Program for high school students. The curriculum
included: Money Basics, Credit and Debit, Preparing for College, Home Ownership, and Insurance. Approximately 30 high school students attended the week-long camp. The team reported that it was a great group of students and the presentations were well received.

Stearns Financial Group is proud to be the first firm to join the Wealth Management Board of Advisors for the Peggy Ward Financial Literacy Center and Wealth Management Program at NCCU. The
program was established in 2022 to encourage diversity in the financial advisory industry, and to encourage financial literacy to underserved markets in the broader community. In addition to board
membership, various team members will continue to have the opportunity to teach classes in financial planning at the university and at the community level via the Financial Literacy Center.

Junior Achievement Summer Finance Camp

Michele Carrera Anderson, from our Greensboro office, volunteered on July 27th at a first-ever Summer Finance Camp for elementary school students. Students participated in discussion, activities, and games to learn about entrepreneurship and managing finances. Michele worked with two other volunteers and the JA Staff to present lessons to over 20 fourth graders from across the Alamance County area.
